Self Talk
Say it again to myself
Main Concept
Self Talk helps students to repeat information that they have just heard, so that they can remember it
Encouraging students to repeat or rehearse key information or instructions will assist their retention and recall and help reduce cognitive overload.
Show students the Self Talk icon. What is happening in the icon? This icon shows a student talking to themselves with a speech bubble. Self Talk, also known as rehearsal, can be used to remind you of hints (“look at the operation before starting a maths problem”), helpful phrases (“I need to pay attention from the beginning of the lesson or else I may miss something”), or anything that students often forget to do.
Some examples that illustrate the use of Self Talk in everyday life can be explored. For example, professional sports players and musicians rehearsing key phrases and strategies before and during events.
