Picture it

Picture It

Create a picture of the activity in my mind

Main Concept

To make visual representations of what students have heard or read

Creating a mental image of information can help students remember and understand. Supporting students to create rich mental images will assist them in having a more detailed understanding of the information or instruction. Mental images can be made more powerful and enduring by integrating visual imagery with other sensory modalities such as auditory, gustatory, olfactory, tactile and vestibular.

Show the Picture It icon to the students. Ask them what is happening in the icon. The icon shows that separate pieces of information (the balls) are being combined and integrated into a single picture.

A suggested activity is for the class teacher to select and read a short story to the class and ask students to describe the mental images they have created which may be only a visual picture but could also have sounds, smells, tastes and sensations of touch and movement associated with them.
